Beholden to the Beast: A Conversation with Miguel Carter-Fisher

“In so many ways, we eagerly dive into the mediation the modern world passes over to us with open hands. Whether it is soulless screens or myopic conceptualism, we are greeted every day with a normalized world of subsidiary ideas and secondary experiences. Art gives us a chance to reconnect in real ways, but where the world expects shallow cop-outs, art and design asks for true engagement.

This week Garreth and Ryan sit down with Miguel Carter-Fisher to talk about painting, philosophy, and escaping back into the real world. With a focus on figurative painting, Miguel Carter-Fisher thinks deeply about his work and the way it points to a world that exists and can be experienced.”

Rethink Suffering and Death

“There is a great deal of mythology and mysticism that surrounds the arts, especially when it comes to suffering and death. For centuries artists have been seen as tortured individuals who have a special sense about life or unique view into death. Art works from around the globe show depictions of the most normal and human activity: death. So what is it about death? What does it mean to engage with this topic? And why does it seem artists have a particular ability to see and understand loss?

This week Ryan and Garreth are joined once again in the studio by painters Ian C. Hess and Miguel Carter-Fisher to talk about the suffering and death in art.”

“An artist’s model can be a stranger, a lover, and countless roles in between. Co-founder Lauren moderates a discussion between artists Artists Charis J Carmichael Braun (Long Island, NY), Miguel Carter-Fisher (Richmond, VA), and Diana Corvelle (Petaluma, CA) regarding just how well they know—or decline knowing—their models, and how those relationships (or lack thereof) influence their portrayals.”

“It's been such an emotional and confusing time for our communities and Beauty for Freedom wanted to address the police brutality and widespread systemic racism representing historical and current sources of trauma in communities of color.

We decided to go back to our communities of artists and thought leaders and have started a special #BreakingDistance Podcast series discussing Race Relations, political activism and the role of the arts and communication in healing; the first episode features Miguel Carter-Fisher, Professor at Virginia State University and Artist (Narrative Painter). This is our response to our current civil rights crisis, the collective trauma caused by inequality and violence, and processing our emotions throughout.”
